Copenhagen is the epitome of Scandi cool and I’ve witnessed it! I also learned that Denmark is famous for being the “Happiest Country in the World”, which is maybe because of its stereotype as a semi-socialist system where healthcare is free, short working weeks, long holidays, free college education, and so on. However, one thing I’ve found to be true for sure is that Danes are really nice and very outgoing
I’ve heard great things about this city through many sources and surprisingly I heard it from the Norwegians. I’m glad that I finally got to know Denmark’s capital. I love Danish design in furniture, homeware, fashion, and jewelry for its sleek and clean lines, simple but sophisticated - less is more. Danish design makes me feel happy. If you’re Bang & Olufsen fans you’ll know what I’m talking about. More than that, their food and pastries are just perfect for my taste buds. There’s an extensive wide range of great restaurants from ultra-fine dining to bistros that will not break your bank for savoring great food. Their transit infrastructure of metro and bus routes is excellent for getting around so taking in the sights of Copenhagen is a breeze. However, people seem to travel by two wheels rather than four from what I’ve seen.
What we did in Copenhagen;
Nyhavn Harbor. It’s THE tourist spot. It just cannot be missed; the colorful buildings and cafes along the canal. Everyone loves to visit Nyhavn, it’s the harbor at the heart of Copenhagen. It’s the icon. We loved it.
Tivoli Gardens. It’s not just a garden. It’s the amusement park that inspired Mr. Walt Disney. This is the world’s second-oldest amusement park right in the city center.
We visited palaces; Christiansborg, familiar to many through the Danish smash-hit TV series Borgen, and the residence of the Royal Family at Amalienborg are unmissable. At Amalienborg, I got to see the classic marching and changing of the Danish guards.
Studied cultural history at the National Museum of Denmark.
Strøget Shopping Mile. Shop till you drop is real. We shopped till we dropped and boosted our adrenaline with a double shot of espresso at the cafe in the corner of Kongen Nytorv where Hermes is right behind us.
Savor the patisseries at Conditori La Glace, an elegant Danish pastry shop dating to 1870. This cafe has the best pastries & cakes we have had in our lives. Just the right amount of sweetness and every bite is freshly made I swear. Speaking of which I’m starting to drool over this topic.
Visited Round Tower (Rundetårn), a 36-meter-high structure built as an observatory in 1642. The rooftop offers magnificent panoramic views over the city.
We’ve enjoyed eating and drinking just because it’s a vacation. Simple as that! We ate plenty of good food. If you want to experience an ultra fine dining 3 Michelin stars restaurant, I encourage you to book a table months in advance at Noma restaurant. If you don’t know, Noma is the No. 1 World’s Best Restaurant. This might sound strange but we have had the best Japanese food in Copenhagen, not in Tokyo! Kudos to Chef/Owner Uki at Bento Copenhagen! Best grilled Salmon ever. Other than that we followed https://www.bonappetit.com/story/copenhagen-restaurant-travel-guide/amp
There are plenty of things to do, which can be followed https://www.visitdenmark.com/denmark/things-to-do. This website is such a great tool to know their culture, Danish food, and quirks, and customize our preferences.
Where to Stay?
Copenhagen’s Inner City, which includes the Old Town, has the greatest concentration of major attractions, including the picturesque Nyhavn Harbor, Town Hall Square, and Tivoli Gardens, and this is one of the best areas to stay for the first time in Copenhagen.
Without a doubt, Copenhagen is a charming city that’s easy to traverse by foot, bike, and metro. This is Hans Christian Andersen’s family tale city and it’s filled with architecture that’s both colorful and regal. We had fun times in Copenhagen, however, we cut the trip short a few days from what we originally planned and flew back to Oslo where it fits our preference most before we traveled back home to the long heat summer in Arizona.
